Ivalice – um reino abençoado pela luz dos deuses e governado pelo Leão de Duas Cabeças. Um ano após sua derrota para Ordallia na Guerra dos Cinquenta Anos, o rei sucumbiu à doença, deixando um mero menino de dois anos para ascender ao trono.

Quem quer que fosse nomeado regente governaria de verdade, e assim surgiram dois candidatos rivais: os duques Goltanna e Larg, cujos feitos durante a guerra lhes renderam grande renome. Goltanna, o Leão Negro, e Larg, o Leão Branco, estavam destinados a entrar em conflito, e o conflito resultante viria a ser conhecido como a Guerra dos Leões.
